Meals on Wheels – Food Delivery
Redeemer’s program is designed to support some of the food needs of the Richmond-area Meals on Wheels clients. Supervised by Central Virginia FeedMore, Meals on Wheels is a national network of nonprofit organizations that provide low cost meals to people who are unable to shop for groceries and/or prepare meals. Meals are prepared in a central kitchen to meet a client’s dietary needs and distributed to pick-up points around the region.
Redeemer volunteers work in teams of two. The teams pick up meals at Central Baptist Church on Courthouse Road at 10:30 am on Friday mornings.
Volunteers deliver frozen meal packages (five meals) to clients in Chesterfield County. Each route requires about two hours to complete. A volunteer team usually delivers once each month. When possible, volunteers are scheduled for three-month periods. The frequency of assignments is flexible.
In addition, Redeemer volunteers believe this is a “care and concern” opportunity. The client’s general condition is observed during these brief encounters. If a volunteer notices that a client is weak or possibly disoriented, the volunteer is asked to report that situation to the Meals on Wheels Customer Service office for follow-up. The brief interaction between client and volunteer is an important part of the ministry.
New volunteers are initially assigned to ride with a veteran team to learn the simple pick-up and delivery procedures. The only requirements for joining this ministry are that each volunteer have a cell phone and day-time availability.
